It doesn’t matter where you get your collagen from. There can be large quality and environmental differences in collagen supplements. Most manufacturers can only trace their products back to their processing plant, but have no control over how and where exactly their collagen originates. Studies of collagen from wild-caught fish have, for example, shown traces of heavy metals and other pollution.
The two most common sources of collagen in supplements are cattle (bovine) and fish (marine). There are several differences between the two sources that we have written more about in another post. Here I will just scratch the surface of the two most important:
- Collagen from fish is absorbed better in the body (up to 1.5 times better according to studies)
- Fish production has less impact on the climate than cattle production
For those reasons (and a number of others), we only use 100% marine collagen peptides in Kollagen+.
The quality depends on conditions and nutrients
But the source is not the only thing that matters for the quality. As with all foods, the conditions under which the source has lived have a major impact on the purity and effectiveness of the final product. If the animals do not get the right nutrients, the quality of the final product deteriorates.
Our producer only uses sustainable quality feed from GMO-free sources. The quality of the fish feed is checked and approved by ASC. This ensures that our collagen peptides are always of the highest quality.
With wild-caught saltwater fish and land animals, the quality will depend on, among other things, weather conditions, season, place of capture and what feed the fish has had. Therefore, the quality of the final product can vary from time to time.
Choose collagen with consideration for the environment

There is a big difference between production methods and the quality of different collagen supplements. Therefore, it is important that you choose a product from a fully traceable and quality-controlled source.
The freshwater fish (single source collagen) that Nutrinic uses lives in a fully controlled, traceable and stable environment. This means that the nutritional value and quality are the same from production to production. In fact, our collagen peptides originate from the world’s only ASC certified production. All stages of production are strictly controlled and fully sportable through the extensive ASC certification program. It guarantees full transparency from breeding to final product and is your guarantee that the collagen peptides meet ASC’s high quality and environmental requirements.
